interior remodeling and conversion of two floors and lower level of a 3 1/2-story lincoln park brick victorian. the resulting 4,200 s.f. single-family residence also includes a separate third floor studio and loft for the owner's business. although the classic red brick facade of the residence presents a traditional front to the street, the owner's favored a more contemporary treatment for the interior planning and finishes. the first floor is comprised of two spaces, one public, and one private, with a back lit glass floor inlay marking the transition between the living spaces at the front, and the master bedroom suite at the rear. a custom steel and glass staircase, set in front of a wall of frosted glass block, leads from the first floor living areas up to a second floor stair hall. a concave wall rendered in a deep saturated hue defines the edge of two of the four bedrooms on this level. custom metal work, millwork, and lighting were used throughout the project.

interior design and remodeling of a penthouse condominium unit at the helmut jahn designed 600 north fairbanks residences. S2 Architects provided pre-construction design services, that allowed for a redesign of the unit layout, including extensive revisions made to the master bedroom suite and to the public zones of the residence. the interior finish selections are represented by the simple elemental materials of; wood, exposed concrete, smooth plaster, and glass; and were selected to compliment the buildings modern design aesthetic, and so as not to compete with the stunning floor to ceiling views afforded by the buildings glass skin.

commercial/residential | chicago client-specific prototype design for a new construction mixed-use building to be constructed on a standard city parcel. the program for the project would provide for rental commercial space on the ground floor; an additional owner occupied commercial space on the lower level for the building owner's own business; a second and third floor duplex owner's residence with connected rooftop terrace and light court; and a for-sale fourth floor simplex residential condominium unit. additionally, both of the residential units, as well as the owner's business floor, would have internal access to the buildings rooftop amenities of a rooftop terrace and landscaped green roof areas.

private residence | chicago interior remodeling, and bi-level family room addition, to a 3-story single-family residence located within the lakewood-balmoral historic district. vintage detailing was preserved in existing rooms and inspired the new trimwork that was extended into the newly remodeled spaces and additions. the connection to the first floor family room from the remodeled kitchen incorporated a pass through butlter's pantry leading to a breakfast room overlooking the new story-and-a-half family room. existing space was reconfigured on the first floor for a new laundry room that also provided access to a new side yard sitting porch. along with the remodeling of multiple existing bathrooms, a new primary bathroom was added to the second floor owner's suite along with an adjacent walk-through dressing area.

interior remodeling and mudroom addition to a 2-story brick victorian in the heart of lincoln park. contemporary finishes and details, along with an open planning approach, bring an updated feel to this stately structure. the original maze of existing rooms at the back of the residence were removed, and restructured, allowing for a natural and contemporary flow of the public rooms from the living room through to the kitchen. an extensive remodeling of the second floor included a reconfiguration of the master suite, and a complete redo of the three upstairs bathrooms.

interior renovation of a 1920's firehouse that had previousely been converted to a single-family residence. additional bedroom space was added on the ground floor along with a new shared bathroom, and the creation of a high ceilinged family space, where the fire engines once parked. A new entry foyer and main entrance was created utilizing the opening of the orignal firehouse doors. the second floor primary bedroom, bathroom and closets were remodeled, along with the open-plan living spaces opening on to a rooftop terrace.

1,500 s.f. one-bedroom, two-bath residence, designed as a second home for a chicago couple. sited on a one acre wooded lot, this contemporary designed home was intended to be a quiet retreat from city life, with ample south facing floor to ceiling glass doors connecting to outdoor living spaces. the design incorporates a humble material palette such as a polished concrete slab-on-grade floor, recycled glass countertops, natural slate tiles, and an exterior finished in cement board siding and a planted green roof.

designed as a retirement destination for a chicago area couple, this new-construction home is built into the slope of a densely wooded five acre parcel, and sited to benefit from it's south facing exposure overlooking, and relating to the surrounding rolling landscape. the residence is designed to be efficient in planning, materials use, and energy consumption, and is designed to a human scale using only what is needed to provide for an open light filled interior, with a comforting relationship to the natural environment.

this master suite remodeling was designed to work within the confines of the existing roof lines. tasked with liberating the existing second floor spaces of their sense of confinement, the open layout pushes the boundaries of where the bathroom begins and the master suite ends. a vibrate color palette plays off the subdued tones of maple cabinetry and flooring, and the metallic-hued porcelain floor and wall tiles. custom steel elements treated with a chemical patina are used throughout the space for railings, hardware, and trim details.

new construction contemporary-style 3-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath single-family residence for a couple relocating from the city. designed as two intersecting volumes; the lower 1-story volume containing the public living spaces (living room, dining room, kitchen), the taller "split-level" 2-story volume, arranged a half floor above and below the public floor, contains the sleeping rooms and bathrooms. modest natural stone and wood finishes are used throughout the interiors, metal and wood siding materials would be used for the exteriors.

this developer led rehab of an existing 1 1/2-story northside residence included removal of the existing upper floor and roof to allow for the construction of a new second flor above the existing first floor structure. The first floor structure was aslo raised to provide additional height in the remodeled lower level, creating a light-filled and modern open-plan residence.

field museum of natural history | chicago to mark the opening of the new museum campus, the field museum set out to do a major reordering of their prized grand public space, stanley field hall. all of the disparate non-fixed elements, within the hall, were removed and replaced by new pieces of one unified design. ticket booths, benches, signage kiosks, and a new central information desk were designed and fabricated for the space. existing non-movable displays were refurbished to compliment the new design elements. additional smaller size matching signage kiosks were fabricated for use throughout the museum to enhance the museums way-finding system.

a multi-phase updating of the corporate office interiors, for a prominent high-end printing company, to project a professional image consistent with the high quality printing products that they produce. in some cases, new office space was created for the growing sales staff, from existing warehouse space. in addition to furniture and finishes selections, custom designed maple millwork, and a playful material and color palette were used throughout the project, to create a professional and enriching work environment.
